Hawaii Five-Oh?

Well, the premiere has come and gone....what did we think?

Eh....I'll be honest, I was really looking forward to this, the promos promised tons of action and great scenery.....you can't go wrong with Hawaii....but then the show started....

Right away you can tell the budget for this show was pretty good, that's a good thing, they're going to need it, at least for now....

Lots of high tech mumbo jumbo, and so forth, the opening scene was built to explain why Steve McGarrett (main character) decides to join this task force...it was okay, typical action movie type hostage rescue/exchange gone wrong, terrorist gets away...

Anyways, not to give away any real details of the story, but it all leads to the Governor creating a task force to combat crime in the state of Hawaii.....

The team consists of:

Daniel Dae Kim (Jin from Lost) as Chin Ho Kelley, a former HPD, who now works as a rent-a-cop in Pearl Harbor.

Scott Caan (Scott Lavin from Entourage) as Det. Dan Williams who relocated to Hawaii from New Jersey to be closer to his daughter, which they constantly remind you of throughout the show, which is sort of annoying...I'll get to that later....

and....

Grace Park (Boomer from BSG) as Kona, a cousin of Chin Ho, "fresh from the academy", she's a surfer and she's ready to kick ass....

Ok, the cast seems good to go, the action is so so, the real problem so far, at least in this episode is....chemistry...

It might be okay if CBS didn't have 10 other shows that basically have the same formula, but execute better.....CSI: Vegas, New York, Miami, NCIS: DC, LA, Etc...

There's no real chemistry between the characters, maybe that'll come in time if the show is given a chance to grow, but as of now.....yikes...

The dialogue is terrible, the writers explain everything to you instead of letting you find out through the story....for example when introducing the main character, they have the Governor basically talking to the audience, "he's a former Navy Seal, graduated from Annapolis, etc...."  I hate when movies/shows do that....

The banter between Danno and McGarrett seems forced...Danno says something like, 'Next time you get your partner shot, you APOLOGIZE!!!!'  (that's not an exact quote, but close enough for you to get the feeling)

Chin Ho's character is okay, he doesn't seem like a real local [Hawaiian]....he may look it, and he manages to work in some pigeon talk-ish words (howlie) but he doesn't feel authentic....

The bright spot in the show, is Grace Park as Kona, she's hot, a lil too skinny for my taste, but her acting just feels more.....real....and her main scene is the most tense moment in the show, her action scene FEELS more authentic.....

The final action sequence of the pilot is anti-climatic.....the guy that McGarrett has been chasing, the guy who is the reason for him joining this task force, is to easy to defeat....you end up feeling like....."uh....is that it?"

This was the first episode, so hopefully things will get better....the original was such a hit, this has got a lot to live up to....I was too young to remember any of the original episodes, but my parents loved it, and it ran from 1968-1980.....it also had such an impact on pop culture....go to Hawaii today and you'll still find a shirt somewhere with the phrase, "Book'em, Danno"....or how bout the term 5-O? that's right, it came from this show....

when people refer to cops as 5-O, it's because this show was such a hit back in the day, that it caught on in California, that people started referring to cops as 5-O....

Here's hoping the show gets better....meanwhile if you're looking for an excellent new show to watch....jump to HBO for Boardwalk Empire.....
