Segway company owner rides scooter off cliff

UK exec, who bought firm a year ago, dies in accident near his estate

Jim Heselden died Sunday in freak accident after riding a Segway off a cliff.

A British businessman who bought the Segway company less than a year ago died after riding one of the scooters off a cliff and into a river near his Yorkshire estate.
Jim Heselden, known locally as Jimi, acquired the Segway company from its U.S. inventor Dean Kamen in December 2009.
According to the British media, Heselden, 62, plunged into the River Wharfe while riding a rugged country version of the two-wheeled transporter on Sunday.
Police said a witness had reported seeing a man fall over a 30-foot drop into the river near Boston Spa, 140 miles north of London.
"Police were called at 11.40 a.m. yesterday to reports of a man in the River Wharfe, apparently having fallen from the cliffs above," a spokesman told The Daily Mail.
A Segway was recovered from the scene. "At this time we do not believe the death to be suspicious," the spokesman added.
"It is with great sadness that we have to confirm that Jimi Heselden has died in a tragic accident near his home in West Yorkshire," his company, Hesco Bastion, said in a statement.
and ranked 395th on the Sunday Times Rich List.

Leading philanthropist
On Sept. 18, the Yorkshire Post reported that Heselden had donated $36 million of his fortune to charity, making him one of Britain’s leading philanthropists.
Most recently, he gave $15 million to the Leeds Community Foundation, which helps disadvantaged parts of the north of England city.
"Jimi was an amazing man who, apart from being a wonderful success story for Leeds due to his business acumen, was also remarkably selfless and generous, giving millions to local charities to help people in his home city," said Tom Riordan, the chief executive of Leeds City Council.
Heselden himself came from poor beginnings in Leeds and left school at the age of 15 to work in the mines.
He got his break in 1990 when he invented a concertina design for wire cage walls, which are used by the military to protect bases and also for flood protection. The headquarters of his firm is a short distance from Heselden's childhood home.
Heselden was appreciative of his good fortune, but always remembered his own tough beginnings.

Hawaii Five-Oh?

Well, the premiere has come and gone....what did we think?

Eh....I'll be honest, I was really looking forward to this, the promos promised tons of action and great scenery.....you can't go wrong with Hawaii....but then the show started....

Right away you can tell the budget for this show was pretty good, that's a good thing, they're going to need it, at least for now....

Lots of high tech mumbo jumbo, and so forth, the opening scene was built to explain why Steve McGarrett (main character) decides to join this task force...it was okay, typical action movie type hostage rescue/exchange gone wrong, terrorist gets away...

Anyways, not to give away any real details of the story, but it all leads to the Governor creating a task force to combat crime in the state of Hawaii.....

The team consists of:

Daniel Dae Kim (Jin from Lost) as Chin Ho Kelley, a former HPD, who now works as a rent-a-cop in Pearl Harbor.

Scott Caan (Scott Lavin from Entourage) as Det. Dan Williams who relocated to Hawaii from New Jersey to be closer to his daughter, which they constantly remind you of throughout the show, which is sort of annoying...I'll get to that later....

and....

Grace Park (Boomer from BSG) as Kona, a cousin of Chin Ho, "fresh from the academy", she's a surfer and she's ready to kick ass....

Ok, the cast seems good to go, the action is so so, the real problem so far, at least in this episode is....chemistry...

It might be okay if CBS didn't have 10 other shows that basically have the same formula, but execute better.....CSI: Vegas, New York, Miami, NCIS: DC, LA, Etc...

There's no real chemistry between the characters, maybe that'll come in time if the show is given a chance to grow, but as of now.....yikes...

The dialogue is terrible, the writers explain everything to you instead of letting you find out through the story....for example when introducing the main character, they have the Governor basically talking to the audience, "he's a former Navy Seal, graduated from Annapolis, etc...."  I hate when movies/shows do that....

The banter between Danno and McGarrett seems forced...Danno says something like, 'Next time you get your partner shot, you APOLOGIZE!!!!'  (that's not an exact quote, but close enough for you to get the feeling)

Chin Ho's character is okay, he doesn't seem like a real local [Hawaiian]....he may look it, and he manages to work in some pigeon talk-ish words (howlie) but he doesn't feel authentic....

The bright spot in the show, is Grace Park as Kona, she's hot, a lil too skinny for my taste, but her acting just feels more.....real....and her main scene is the most tense moment in the show, her action scene FEELS more authentic.....

The final action sequence of the pilot is anti-climatic.....the guy that McGarrett has been chasing, the guy who is the reason for him joining this task force, is to easy to defeat....you end up feeling like....."uh....is that it?"

This was the first episode, so hopefully things will get better....the original was such a hit, this has got a lot to live up to....I was too young to remember any of the original episodes, but my parents loved it, and it ran from 1968-1980.....it also had such an impact on pop culture....go to Hawaii today and you'll still find a shirt somewhere with the phrase, "Book'em, Danno"....or how bout the term 5-O? that's right, it came from this show....

when people refer to cops as 5-O, it's because this show was such a hit back in the day, that it caught on in California, that people started referring to cops as 5-O....

Here's hoping the show gets better....meanwhile if you're looking for an excellent new show to watch....jump to HBO for Boardwalk Empire.....

True Blood finale....

courtesy of the Atlantic:

'True Blood': What's Good, What's Weird, What's Next

SEP 13 2010, 8:10 AM ET
sookie-cemetary_post.jpg
HBO
Three things came out of the True Bloodfinale that probably pleased most fans greatly:

1) Eric survived (HBO is a benevolent puppet-master);

2) Alcide returned; and

3) Sookie kicked Bill out. I don't think she's going to take him back this time, either (though I think I've been wrong on this point before)—this is the first time he has been discovered to have consciously betrayed her. It's unclear how Eric knows this (did the queen tell him?), but the night Bill and Sookie met, Bill was trying to get access to Sookie at the behest of his queen. He allowed Sookie to get attacked and almost beaten to death so that he could give her his blood, and thus chemically manipulate her into falling in love with him. That scores pretty high on the list of dirty tricks a guy can use to get a first date.

Finale head-scratchers:

1) Why would burying Russell in cement seem like a good idea for even a minute? What a cruel trick to play on the people who eventually accidentally release him. Worse, it's such an unreliable storage method—how will they be alerted when he escapes? This is just begging for trouble.

2) Godric's visit from the peaceful afterlife (or possibly just from Eric's mind). He keeps telling Eric that after death all beings find peace ... but then right after that he says Eric's hatred of Russell is making him (Godric) bleed. Make up your mind!

3) Sookie's evil cackle as she rinses Talbot's remains down the garbage disposal. I didn't know she had that in her ... and I now wonder if we'll ever hear the details of Russell's plan to use Sookie's blood to resurrect Talbot. Is vampire resurrection another thing they all have to worry about?

Things to look forward to in Season Four:

1) Fairyland! What does it look like? Is it more fairy-like, or more alien-looking? Is Claudine as sweet as she seems, or do fairies have ulterior purposes for caring for Sookie, just as Bill did? These fairies seem frankly stoned all the time—will we get more insight into this, and into their predilection for hanging out in cemeteries? It's time to see them teach Sookie how to use her powers, and tell her what actually did kill her parents. These two ingredients would set her up perfectly for some more adventures.

2) Lafayette's introduction to the world of witchcraft! I'm still a little suspicious of Jesus, and will be until we find out exactly why Lafayette was having trippy visions of Jesus a la monster head, but it looks like he's going to bring some very interesting additions to the next season. Will there be any association or conflict with Holly the Wiccan?

3) More of Lafayette's trippy visions seem to confirm Arlene's nightmares that her pregnancy is a terrifying demonic-spawn-of-a-serial-killer situation. It is difficult to imagine how this will be resolved since the herbal-tea abortion attempt failed. It is also difficult to see how this will be blown up into an immediate conflict, since the baby of a human serial killer is still just human—why is it getting all supernatural? Are they going to need an exorcism?

4) We need the completion of the Sam-Tommy scene to show us that Sam did NOT just kill his brother. At worst, he probably winged him in the leg to get him to stop running ... Or shot the bag of money out of his hand ... Or something relatively benign, basically. 5) The shot of Summer's doll lying on the floor of Hoyt's new house gave me the creeps even more than Sookie's crazy laughter (though I've had a fear of dolls-in-the-night for quite some time, so HBO can't take all the credit for this one). When Mrs. Fortenberry and Summer get their latest attack plan (dolls with assault rifles?) over with, maybe they'll finally give up.

6) It takes a village of inbred hicks to make Jason the brains of an operation—it will be interesting to see how he manages it. It can't possibly be more of a disaster in the making than Bill's decision to destroy every vampire that has ever tasted Sookie's blood. Looks like fun times are ahead in Bon Temps!

But not for about a year.

MaCH-EtE! the no bullsh!t review.

3 out of 4 of the ol' Pork Chop rating

If you were a fan of 80's style action movies, where the story doesn't really matter so much as the violence and bad ass one liners (Machete don't text.  or I absolve you of all your sins.  Now, get the fuck out!) then I'd say this movie will be quite enjoyable to you.

Danny Trejo awesome, his ugly ass face is a character in itself.

Michelle Rodriguez hot.  She plays the same character in every damn movie, except here she looks amazing doing so.

Jessica Alba is hot as usual, her hair kinda looks funky, but there is a scene where she is in the shower that makes up for it all.....and it's kinda funny in a 80's kinda way how she "struggles to come with answers" while pondering in the shower...

Robert De Niro....what can I say, it was wierd seeing him in this kind of movie, but still pretty cool...

oh and for those who actually wanna see Lindsey Lohan naked...that's not her....they just recycle the footage from the Grindhouse trailer, there's only one part in the movie where you can just barely make out a nipple....you'll see...

Don Johnson and Steven Segal???  I can end the review right there....

overall, it was an good action movie that had me crackin' up.....they say that there's a message about immigration and so forth, but i didn't really care....i'm not that smart to care, i just want to see tits and action and that's what i got.
